KNOXVILLE — It was a beautiful night for baseball on Panther Drive Friday night and Beau Leisure was at the top of his game as he led his Knoxville Panther team to a 2-0 Red Rock Rivalry win over Pella. Leisure tossed a masterful two-hit shutout and sent 15 Dutch batters back to the bench on strikes.

Pella’s Keegan Hansen was also in the zone and a classic pitching duel developed between a pair of the better pitchers in south central Iowa. The pair matched goose eggs on the board for three innings and Hansen was perfect for three innings. But in the bottom of the fourth the Panthers broke through for the only runs of the game.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Knoxville’s Luke Spaur legged out a bunt for a single and he scampered home when Trenten Kingery lashed an RBI triple to the right field corner. Then with two out, Dakota Ramsey stroked a key base hit to score Kingery.

That would be all that Leisure would need as the lanky right-hander blew through the Dutch line up for the final nine outs. With the pitch count rising and a one out walk in the top of the fifth, Coach Turner DeVore paid a visit to the mound.

“My shoulder was a little tender at the time but I was determined to finish this game,” Leisure said. “This was just a great game and Keegan is a great pitcher. My pitches were working and I was able to mix and locate well and stay ahead of the hitters. It has been a while since we have beaten Pella. We have been close, but tonight we got the job done.”

Pella would get runners to second base four times in the contest, but each time Leisure would reach back for a little extra gas and get the strikeout he needed to get out of the inning.

Pella’s lone extra base hit was a two-out double over the centerfielder’s head by Isaiah Kettler in the sixth inning.

Leisure’s line for the game was two hits, no runs, four walks, two hit batsmen and 15 strikeouts. Hansen allowed three hits, two runs, one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings and Tate Weesner tossed a scoreless sixth inning.

“What a great game,” Panther Coach Turner DeVore said after the game. “Beau had a fantastic game and our bats came through at the right time against a very good pitcher. A 15-strikeout game is a super effort, but our defense made the plays at the right time. It has always been said that if you want to be good in Marion County, you have to beat Pella. We got that done tonight and I am so proud of this team.”

The Panthers are off until Thursday when they travel to Eddyville for a South Central Conference showdown with the EBF Rockets. Pella is back in action Tuesday and Wednesday when they host Gilbert and Norwalk.
