MIDDLETOWN — In February, Middletown Town Councilor Terri Flynn proposed a tax or fee for visitors to the town to help supplement the costs of school building repairs and support the Municipal Outreach Department.

“The concept is simple: visitors staying overnight at a hotel or short-term rental pay a nominal fee or tax per room, per night,” Flynn said at the Town Council’s Feb. 7 meeting.

No votes were taken on Flynn’s pitch; discussion of the topic will be picked up again at the council’s March 7 meeting.

Flynn suggested taxes or fees ranging from $1 to $5.

“Flat fees are not uncommon in the hotel industry,” Flynn said. “If Middletown did not need it, Middletown would not ask this of its visiting guests. However, the Middletown taxpayers can not do it alone anymore.”

The School Building Committee recently proposed a $90 million bond for improvements to the schools. At the Town Council meeting on Jan. 18, the committee requested the council approve the conceptual designs and cost estimates. A split council approved $60 million instead.
